Review: adidas Ultra Boost "Ash Pearl"

After getting my better half a pair of NMDs last year, I created an adidas monster. Recently she has been wanting a pair of UBs, so I picked her up the Ash Pearl colorway, but not before I did a quick review. Here are my thoughts (and some of hers too) on this pair.

Adidas introduced the UB 4.0 back in December, and has had some of the best colorways since the 1.0 in my opinion. I personally haven't bought any 4.0s yet, but I have tried on a pair and plan to grab a pair before the 5.0 drops. (If anyone from adidas is reading this... drop more neon colorways like the 1.0. please)

This pair, in my opinion, is one of the better 4.0 colorways, and best UB colorways in awhile. The rose gold/ rust pink color is definitely in right now and spreading like fire (ex: rust pink Art Basel Jordan 1s... one of this years best drops) and so adidas decided to join the party and drop an 'Ash Pearl' Women's Ultraboost. Of course, men can easily pull off this colorway too (I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it) but it is in women's sizing so, before you buy, convert your size.

Anyway, the toebox of the 4.0 looks very much like the 1.0. It has that chevron type arch towards the toe, and the knit looks very similar. OF course, this pair has a pinstripe type knit to it as well, which is also thicker - but it is probably the best primeknit on an Ultraboost so far (as far as comfort, hold, stretch-ability and quality go).

Moving down the shoe, the cage is also an Ash Pink color (as are the laces) and at this angle, you can see the striped primeknit a little better. The boost is, well its boost (still hard to clean) but still as comfy as ever. I want to see adidas do more completely tonal CWs by dying the boost other colors besides black, but as their focus is now on 4D tech, I think we will see more colors of the 4D soles as opposed to more boost colors.

One thing Tiffani (jeff4kicks' better half) loves about the Ultraboost, is that it can be loose laced and still have great hold on your foot. Her NMDs have to be tied tighter so they dont slide, but she has her UBs loose laced and says they don't shift on her feet. I only have 1.0 UBs, and I uncaged them all (in hindsight, I would have kept a couple cages on) but that is mainly because the cage provides foot support and holds your feet in place. This allows the knit to not get stretched out and provide extra primeknit protection. I would keep the cages on this pair, I think the pink color contributes to its overall appeal.

I love the knit on the heel, it is extra padded and feels like it has much improved support. The heel cup is, again, pink as you can see, with silver 'ultra boost' writing. I do like the new logo on the insole (shown below) it gives new life to a shoe that has now been reinterpreted and improved upon 4 times, and helps its appeal.

Boost is boost. If you haven't tried it on yet, you absolutely should, it is a game changer. And if you didn't like it, I respect that, but, I think it is some of the best comfort tech available in today's sneaker market. So, not a whole lot extra to say about the boost here, it is an Ultraboost, and sits above a Continental rubber outsole. For the fit, Tiff and I recommend going a half size down from your normal size. I wear a 10, and she wears and 8, I tried on a 9.5 and it fit perfect, and she tried on a 7.5 and it fit great. So sizing, we recommend .5 size down.

Overall, I give the 'Ash Pearl' UB 4.0 an 8.5/10. That is because of the unique color and the fact they kept it tonal with the knit, cage, laces, and lining, and for the comfort and durability, they can be worn all day.

Retail is $180, and while it isn't very budget friendly, the quality and fit speak for themselves, you should at least try on a pair and see the difference.
